Recommended encoder options for setting up an online broadcast

We continue the series of publications, where we describe the process of setting up an online broadcast. This time we will talk about the recommended parameters of the encoder, which can be safely applied with almost any video camera.

So, in order for your broadcast to be stable, first of all, you need to make sure that your outgoing channel is wide enough. To do this, we recommend contacting your ISP to determine the outgoing speed of your Internet connection. You can also use various resources that allow you to measure your connection speed in real time. Based on these indicators, you should choose the appropriate bitrate settings for the stream below. We also recommend that you do not pile your entire band with one stream, leaving some margin for speed of about 15-20% of the total bandwidth of your channel. In case of a backup thread, the total speed of both threads (main and backup) should be considered, also leaving a margin.

Basic encoder settings

Full HD 1080p:

Resolution:
o   1920 х 1080
Bitrate of the video stream:
o   Maximum: 6000 Kbps
o   Optimal: 4500 Kbps
o   Minimum: 3000 Kbps
Bitrate of audio stream:
o   256 Kbps, stereo

HD 720p:

Разрешение:
o   1280 х 720
Bitrate of the video stream:
o   Maximum: 4000 Kbps
o   Optimal: 2500 Kbps
o   Minimum: 1500 Kbps
Bitrate of audio stream:
o   128 Kbps, stereo

SD 480p:

Resolution:
o   854 х 480
Bitrate of the video stream:
o   Maximum: 2000 Kbps
o   Optimal: 1000 Kbps
o   Минимальный: 600 Kbps
Bitrate of audio stream:
o   128 Kbps, stereo

SD 360p:

Разрешение:
o   640 х 360
Bitrate of the video stream:
o   Maximum: 1000 Kbps
o   Optimal: 700 Kbps
o   Minimum: 400 Kbps
Bitrate of audio stream:
o   64 Kbps, mono

Advanced encoder settings

          Protocol:

o   RTMP

         Video codec:

o   H.264/AVC (Main Profile, Level: 4.1)

         Audio codec:

o   AAC or MP3

         Scanning mode:

o   Progressive scan

         Frame frequency:

o   25 – 30 frames per second

         Interval between key frames:

o   1-2 seconds

         Audio sample rate:

o   44100 Hz

The above settings are recommended for any encoder, unless other requirements are specified in the program itself. In particular, we have already written how to set up the FMLE, Wirecast, XSplit encoders for the live broadcast. In the listed encoders there are no compulsory requirements, so you can safely apply the audio and video settings described by us. In any case, when connecting to CDNvideo, technical support will always tell you which settings will work best for a particular screen resolution.

We wish you broadcasts with no interruptions!
